We're trialling next generation EV charging channel for homesowners with on-street parking

Drivers of electric vehicles who park on the street outside their homes are helping to trial a new charging system that provides a safe way to charge their vehicles.

We are constantly looking for ways to improve electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities, particularly for residents without off-street parking and have teamed up Kerbo Charge,  to test their through-pavement EV charging channel technology.

Currently, 20 residents are participating in this innovative trial to evaluate the effectiveness of Kerbo Charge's technology in providing a safe and convenient solution for on-street EV charging.

The through-pavement EV charging channel is a pre-made channel with a hinged lid, designed to fit seamlessly between pavement slabs. This eliminates the hazard of trailing cables across footpaths, ensuring the safety of pedestrians.

This picture shows a home in Biggleswade charging their car from the wall mounted unit, through the channel to the car.

It's great news for anyone who would like an electric vehicle but has been put off because they park on the street outside their home.

The installation process, taking approximately 90 minutes, involves creating a channel in various surfaces such as tarmac, slabs, block paved areas, and even through grass verges. The technology requires minimal pavement excavation, making it a convenient and practical solution. The charging cable is housed within the channel, featuring a self-closing lid that operates similar to a zip. Once the charging is complete, users can easily remove the cable, making the entire process hassle-free.

The Kerbo Charge system may not be suitable for every property and those taking part in the pilot scheme will help test its suitability and if successful could lead to a wider rollout of the technology.

Kerbo Charge have recently made an appearance on Dragon's Den where they secured investment from Sustainability Dragon Deborah Meaden. If you want to hear more you can tune into the episode which aired on 15 February on demand through the BBC iPlayer app.

We will keep you updated with the results of the trial later in the year.
