Funding to enhance local town centres

Five town centres in Central Bedfordshire will receive a boost from our allocation of over £450,000 from its UK Shared Prosperity and DEFRA's Rural England Prosperity funds.

Funding Details

We're pleased to announce that each of our five town councils has been allocated nearly £92,000 for projects aimed at enhancing our local economies and community spaces. This significant investment highlights our commitment to the importance of our high streets and town centres in fostering vibrant communities with a strong sense of identity and pride.

In addition to this, we have received £29,600 in government funding to support various community and cultural projects across our towns. These initiatives include establishing a film club, sharing the rich heritage of our towns, and hosting events to boost both the daytime and evening economies.

The five towns benefiting from these funds are Biggleswade, Flitwick, Leighton Buzzard, Dunstable, and Houghton Regis. Each town council submitted bids detailing projects they believe will make the most significant impact on their communities.

These grants will support various projects, including:

Biggleswade Town Council

  • Rejuvenation of walkways
  • Purchase of heritage and directional signs
  • Installation of a digital information board
  • Upgrades to Century House public toilets

Flitwick Town Council

  • Transformation of 3 Station Road (former Barclays Bank building) into a two-storey restaurant and retail unit with a post office

Leighton Linslade Town Council

  • Installation of benches with integrated plants and trees
  • Planters along Leighton Buzzard Market Square and High Street

Dunstable Town Council

  • Installation of water refill stations
  • Creation of an art trail and installation at Middle Row
  • Power supply improvements in Grove House Gardens
  • Solar benches in Grove House Gardens and the Square
  • Three solar-powered living pillars to enhance biodiversity

Houghton Regis Town Council

  • Greening of the town centre through Houghton Regis in Bloom
  • Provision of planters and hanging baskets
  • Installation of barrier planters and a water storage bowser

We look forward to bringing you updates on the projects as they progress making our towns even better places to live, work, and visit!

We have been allocated £3.55M from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (formerly known as DHLUC) UKSPF programme which is being delivered alongside their £1.06M allocation from DEFRA’s Rural England Prosperity Fund.

The primary goal of the UKSPF is to build pride in place and increase life chances across the UK.
