Bogus "Parish Council Business Directory" email

Act with caution if you receive a suspicious email

image

Trading Standards are warning small businesses to act with caution if they receive a suspicious email that appears to have been sent by a local Parish Council.

We have been made aware of one such email a local business has received, which claims to have been sent by Barton-le-Clay Parish Council, however this type of email may also be sent out under the names of other local Councils.

The email claims that the business’ listing in a Parish Council’s Business Directory is due to expire and instructs the recipient to click on a website link to either renew or cancel the listing within a short deadline.

On first impressions the email may seem genuine, but it does in fact have all the hallmarks of a phishing scam attempting to harvest important information or banking details from the business.

If you ever receive a suspicious email, our advice is to report it, by forwarding the original email to report@phishing.gov.uk and then delete it from your computer or device. Do not reply to the email or click on any links or attachments. If you do inadvertently click on any links, do not provide any personal details or financial information to the sender.

If you suspect a scam, please report it to us by calling us on 0808 223 1133.
