​CCBC budget plans approved

CCBC Councillors met last week to agree the council’s budget for 2024/25, following a period of public consultation.

Cabinet Member for Finance, Cllr Eluned Stenner said “We are facing significant financial challenges over the next few years – the likes of which we have never experienced before.”

“It is clear that very difficult decisions will need to be made and our focus must remain on looking at how we deliver sustainable services that meet the present and future needs of our communities in an extremely challenging financial environment.”

The key elements of this year’s budget include:

  • A 2.5% uplift in the Financial Settlement from Welsh Government for 2024/25
  • A range of permanent and temporary savings totalling £31million
  • The use of £10.6 million from the council’s reserves
  • A 6.9% increase in Council Tax which will see the Band D precept rise from £1,353.01 to £1,446.37(an annual increase of £93.36 or £1.80 per week)

New market traders announced for Ffos Caerffili

New traders have been revealed for Ffos Caerffili – Caerphilly’s own container-style market – which is set to open to the public on Friday, March 15.

The first of its kind in Caerphilly, a full programme of events has been announced across Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16 to celebrate the launch of Ffos Caerffili, featuring live music, local school choirs and workshops led by Ffos traders.

The opening of the market indicates the first stage of the Caerphilly Town 2035 Placemaking Plan, with funding support from the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Initiative.

Caerphilly County Borough Council have improved the online council tax platform in which residents can use to pay their council tax.

70% of our residents currently pay their council tax by direct debit, and we’ve made this process simpler than it ever has been.

Caerphilly Cares Support Package available for families eligible for Free School Meals

The Caerphilly Cares Service offers access to a wide range of support initiatives for individuals and families who are vulnerable or in financial crisis.

If you or anyone you know need support, initial contact can be made to the Caerphilly Cares Team which provides residents with a single coordinated access point for information, advice and assistance.

Caerphilly man guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to his dogs

On 8 February 2024, a Caerphilly man pled guilty at Cwmbran Magistrates Court to animal welfare charges, which included seven charges of failing to meet welfare needs of dogs under his care to the extent required by good practice and three charges of causing unnecessary suffering contrary to the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

Simon Hobbs (aged 46) was fined £360 for causing unnecessary suffering to five dogs including a pregnant Belgian Malinois. Hobbs was ordered to pay costs of £7,884 and a victim surcharge of £144. He was disqualified from keeping all animals for five years.

Council Proudly Adopts Motor Neurone Disease Association Charter

Caerphilly County Borough Council have proudly adopted the Motor Neurone Disease Association Charter (MNDA).

In February 2023, Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Sean Morgan, and Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services, Property and Highways, met with the Campaign Contact of the Motor Neurone Disease Association Charter to discuss the importance of MND awareness and to explain the support they give to those living with MND, their carers, and families

​18-month prison sentence for shop owner caught selling illegal tobacco

A Caerphilly shop owner has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for selling counterfeit cigarettes and tobacco.

Amanj Mawlod Tawfik, aged 36 of Bwlch Road, Cardiff was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment at Newport Crown Court on 26 January 2024

Caerphilly Town Centre launches free public Wi-Fi

WiFi in Caerphilly is part of a wider provision that has already been rolled out in Bargoed, Blackwood, Newbridge, Rhymney, Risca and Ystrad Mynach.

The initiative aims to improve the experience for visitors of the high street by helping people to access online stores and to engage with local businesses online.
