Recycle it right
The Refuse Teams find all sorts of things in recycling bins, here are some of the most unusual finds from the past month:
- Bag of potatoes.
- A 10kg bag full of food and nappies.
- Key safe.
- Microwave.
These are all items which shouldn't be put in the green-lidded recycling bin. Food waste and nappies are considered serious contaminants as they affect good quality recyclables, and can lead to the entire load of recycling being rejected at the sorting facility and sent with your general waste to the incinerator.
For more information on what can be recycled in your green-lidded bin and electrical recycling, check out the website.
A new year for garden waste
The new season for garden waste collections starts on 1 April 2024.
What can I put in my brown-lidded garden waste bin?
- Leaves
- Grass cuttings
- Weeds
- Hedge trimmings
- Twigs
- Cut flowers or house plants
It is not a compost bin so avoid putting food, including windfall fruit or anything home-grown, in your brown-lidded garden waste bin.
When you have received your sticker secure it on the bin below the handle on the back.
If you ordered your sticker(s) after 15 March 2024, please allow up to ten working days* for it to be delivered.
If you ordered your sticker(s) before 15 March 2024 and have not received it by 1 April 2024, contact environment@broxtowe.gov.uk.
*Working days excludes bank holidays and weekends.

Free energy advice at the HEAT hub
On Saturday 16 March, Broxtowe launched the Government funded Home Energy Advice Team Hub and there was a great turnout from residents.
Following a brief introduction to the free energy advice and services Nottingham Energy Partnership (NEP) can offer, attendees had the opportunity to meet the experts and ask questions on:
- Fabric first approach to retrofit.
- Insulation materials for conservation retrofit.
- Solar panels.
- Battery storage.
- Heat pumps.
Thank you to everyone that attended, we are looking to host another event in the north of the Borough.
Public litter bins
One of the responsibilities of the Street Cleansing Teams is installing, maintaining and emptying public litter bins.
Alongside the Town Centre Attendants, they will litter pick when they are out and about. However, to keep your area a nicer place and help out the teams, make sure to use the litter bins correctly.
The public litter bins are dual purpose and can be used for dog waste when it is in a tied bag, and litter.
Public bins are not for household waste, this needs to be disposed of either in your wheelie bin at home or at a household recycling centre. Leaving waste beside a public bin is classed as fly tipping which could lead to a fine. The same rules apply for businesses, as commercial waste must be disposed of using a bin which is designated specifically for this purpose.
If you notice any problems with a litter bin, please use the Report an Issue button on the Broxtowe Borough Council website, so it can be investigated.
