Welcoming spring across Broxtowe...

First signs of spring

image

As increasing temperatures nudge dormant plants back into life, the first signs that spring is just around the corner are increasingly visible in our parks, open spaces and local nature reserves.

Some of the first flowers to bloom each year are crocuses which flower from early February to late March. Crocus bulbs often add the first touch of colour to our parks, so keep an eye out for them next time you visit one of our sites. You can see a bee resting in one of these flowers in the image above taken at Bramcote Hills Park.

Friends of Bramcote Ridge

One of the many incredible groups in the Borough who work hard to support our parks and open spaces are The Friends of Bramcote Ridge. They work alongside the Council's Parks and Open Spaces Team to protect, conserve and enhance former farmland between the residential areas of Wollaton and Bramcote Hills.

The group was established in April 1999 and has been around for an impressive 25 years. Currently, Friends of Bramcote Ridge has over 50 members, many of which are actively involved in supporting the site to such a successful degree that they were awarded their 15th consecutive Green Flag Award last year.

If you would like to support the Friends of Bramcote Ridge, their next work session is on 3 March 2024.

A fruitful partnership sees new community orchard planted in Chilwell

image

The Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor Teresa Cullen was joined by Incredible, Canopy 2050 and the Second Chilwell Scout Group to plant a new orchard at Cator Lane Recreation Ground in Chilwell on Friday 16 February.

16 fruit trees including apple, pear, plum and cherry were planted to provide a variety of fruits that can be harvested throughout the growing season. These trees will also supply shade and habitat for animals and help store carbon dioxide, providing cleaner air quality.

This orchard has been planted as part of our Climate Change and Green Futures strategy.

If you visit the orchard or the play area, make sure to log your trip to the park on Green Rewards for a chance to win a £20 gift voucher in that month's prize raffle.
