Wilder Crow Hill project with Canopy 2050
Volunteers clearing rhododendron in Bramcote
Our Wilder Crow Hill project in Bramcote received a helping hand when volunteers from Canopy 2050 turned out on a wet Sunday to help remove rhododendron from the woodland.
This project aims to restore an area of woodland and grassland at the southern end of Bramcote Hills Park to a more natural state. Native trees and a thriving wild flora would benefit a variety of wildlife as well as capture and store carbon.
Rhododendron is an invasive shrub which forms a dense layer under the woodland canopy, smothering saplings and preventing natural regeneration. Despite the wet weather the volunteers managed to clear over half of the Rhododendron, providing planting areas for the young trees they have been growing at home.
The trees have been grown from wild seed, collected in the local area. Canopy 2050 are always on the lookout for new volunteers, so consider getting involved with tree growing, planting and other conservation projects.

Cemetery paths in Eastwood
A path at Eastwood Cemetery
You said: Improve path surfaces at Eastwood Cemetery.
We did: The Council have now made a significant investment, improving over 500 metres of paths.
The entirety of the new section has been repaired and resurfaced, creating a safer and more accessible burial ground. Works were completed over a two week period with careful coordination between Bramcote Bereavement Services and the Parks Team to minimise disturbance and disruption.
Long term sustainability of our projects is very important and by specifying a high performance tarmacadam surface, we have been able to produce a fine finish and ensure an extended service life.
The cemetery is now fully open again and feedback from visitors has been very positive.

Completion of the Leyton Crescent path in Beeston
Members of the Parks Team in front of the new Leyton Crescent path
Collaboration between the Council's Parks Team, local contractors and volunteers at Leyton Crescent Recreation Ground in Beeston Rylands has benefitted the site with a range of improvements.
You said: The path at Leyton Crescent needs to be improved
We did: The Council completed a 300 metre long path to provide year round access, whatever the weather.
The path also links through to Meadow Road, adding an off-road green route when visiting the site from the south. This work was funded by the Council's capital scheme as part of the Pride in Parks programme
Through winter, the Grounds Maintenance Team have been busy improving the site for people and wildlife, with 24 semi mature trees planted, thanks to funding from the Urban Tree Challenge Fund.
Finally, local residents from the Leyton Crescent Park Wilding Group have been getting their sleeves rolled up to help, and despite the wet weather they have planted 6,000 spring bulbs, including snowdrops, bluebells and wild daffodils.
As a finishing touch, the group will prepare a 1,000 square metre seedbed and sow a linear wildflower meadow to create a nectar rich "Bee Line", with the help of a local Brownie group. The group plan to undertake further wilding and improvements to the park, so if you're interested you could take part.
