It's time to join the  Marvellous Makers!

Children can get creative with this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Marvellous Makers!

The Summer Reading Challenge is a FREE holiday activity for children. It’s all about reading for fun, aiming to improve children’s reading skills and confidence. The Challenge runs throughout the summer holidays, and all children aged 4-11 are welcome to take part!

Children can read anything they like (really – anything!) and collect free rewards for their reading. Just pop in to your local library to sign up from Saturday 6 July.

This year’s Challenge is all about creativity. From dance to drawing, junk modelling to music, there’s something for everyone! Children will be able to find new reads linked to their favourite creative arts, and access free activities at the library. 

The Summer Reading Challenge is developed by The Reading Agency and delivered in partnership with public libraries. This year’s theme has been developed in partnership with Create, a leading charity bringing the creative arts to those who need it most. The bespoke illustrations for Marvellous Makers are created by the brilliant illustrator, Natelle Quek.

What's On in your local library

We're changing our opening hours in all libraries from Monday 22 July. Check online for more details or pick up a leaflet in your local library.

Join us through the summer and be a Marvellous Maker with drop-in crafts at all libraries, or come along to one of our special events:

Thurs 25 July:
Make a bird feeder with The Parks Foundation.  Ensbury Park, 10am-12 noon

Sat 27 July:
Book launch: The Travelling Library Chronicles of Maizey Lee by Erni Sellah. Bournemouth, 12-2pm

Mon 29 July:
Codes and ciphers with the Royal Signals Museum.  Charminster, 10-11am

Tue 30 July:
Setting Sail with Poole Museum on the Move. Tuckton 10-11am

Fri 12 July:
Slideshow and talk: Landscapes of Georgia, Europe.  Creekmoor 10.30am-12noon

Fri 19 July:
Author talk: Under the stairs by Alan J Hill.  Parkstone 10.30am-12noon

Exhibition: Beyond the Bassline

Have you visited our latest exhibition from the British Library Living Knowledge Network yet?

We are thrilled to be collaborating with The British Library to bring you Beyond The Bassline: 500 Years of Black British Music.  The exhibition celebrates Black British music as a form of entertainment and a source of liberation, protest and education.

If you haven't seen it yet, catch it at Bournemouth Library throughout July or Poole Library throughout August.
