Birmingham council leader comments on recent riots

Cllr John Cotton, the leader of Birmingham City Council, has condemned violence throughout the UK in recent days and also acknowledged there had been a "flare-up of tensions" in parts of Birmingham.


Cllr John Cotton, the leader of Birmingham City Council, said:  


"Let me be clear, this mob violence is wholly unacceptable and anyone responsible for threats and violence, whatever their background or motivation, must face consequences for their actions."

Drive to make social homes greener, warmer and more energy efficient gathers pace

Retrofitting council homes reduces energy bills and carbon emissions

Birmingham City Council has retrofitted around a quarter of the homes identified in an ambitious project to make council homes greener, warmer and more energy efficient.


The homes are being fitted with solar panels, new walls and loft insulation, as well as new ventilation systems.


Energy bills halved for council tenant Susan Leicester after retrofits were done on her home. She said:


"Now that the work has been completed, I have seen my energy bills drop. I used to pay around £70 a month, but now it's around £30. I am really happy with that."

"Emergency action" called for on road safety

The city council leaders, Mayor of West Midlands and West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner issued a joint statement on road safety.

The Police and Crime Commissioner, Birmingham City Council’s Leadership and the Mayor of the West Midlands have agreed we must actively work together to make our roads safer.


The call for "emergency action" comes after an increasing number of serious incidents on the roads across the West Midlands.

It marks a significant step towards building a comprehensive charging infrastructure in the city. One that helps encourage people to make the switch from petrol to electric.

Proposals brought forward to sell Perry Barr Residential Scheme plots for range of housing tenures

Nearly 1,000 homes will soon be ready for occupation

The council has approved proposals to sell three developed plots on the Perry Barr Residential Scheme to a third party.


This follows the council's decision earlier this month to use one of the plots on the scheme for council housing.


Both decisions will bring a welcome boost to the supply of homes in the city.

Lord Mayor attends flag-raising ceremony

The Lord Mayor's was at a flag-raising ceremony held to celebrate the 62nd Anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence Day. 


Additionally, the Lord Mayor met the new CEO of the West Midlands Fire Service, Oliver Lee, strengthening civic ties with front-line services. The week concluded with a peace vigil in memory of John Henry Barlow, honouring his legacy and promoting peace within the community.
