TOP STORY: Westmorland and Furness Council protects front line services in tough financial times
Despite challenging financial times, Westmorland and Furness Council has worked hard to achieve a balanced budget for 2024/25 that protects front line services.
This is a major achievement for any council in the current financial climate locally, regionally and nationally, especially for a council that has only been in operation for one year since major Local Government Reorganisation in 2023.
After careful consideration of its financial situation, and the feedback received via its public consultation, Full Council have agreed the following:
* a 2.99% increase in the general Council Tax
* an additional 2% increase for the Adult Social Care precept for 2024/25

Call for Penrith residents to share views on a proposed new parking permit process
A line of parked cars. Text reads: Have your say on a new parking permit process coming to Penrith in spring 2024!
Over 300 people that live and work in Penrith have so far shared views in the council’s consultation on a proposed new parking permit application process.
The new ‘parking protocol’ is set to be formally introduced in Spring 2024 to address specific parking issues in Penrith, making the way on-street parking permits are obtained a fair and consistent process for all.
Next Tuesday (27 February) our Traffic Management Team will also be at Penrith Library from 3pm to 7pm ready to answer your questions and support you to complete the consultation.
If you can’t make it, we encourage you to take part in the consultation by *5pm on Thursday 29 February* by:
* Completing the Penrith Parking Consultation online [
].
* Visiting Penrith Library and filling in a paper copy.

Cumbria Fostering launched new film created by local children in care
Mil Vasic, Director of Childrens' Services at Westmorland and Furness Council
A little bit of ‘Hollywood’ came to Barrow recently (15 Feb) when Westmorland and Furness Council hosted the launch of a thought-provoking new film created by local children in care.
The red carpet was rolled out for around 40 guests who attended the premiere of Home, a film which shows the experience of coming into foster care, through the eyes of our looked after children in Cumbria.
It is hoped that the film will encourage more people in our communities to come forward and find out about fostering and at the same time give a voice to young people in care and support those coming into care to know they are not alone.
