TOP STORY: Council makes commitment to diversity and inclusion
At the Annual General Meeting of Westmorland and Furness Council, held yesterday (9 May), councillors heard more about the council’s commitment to promoting equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).
The commitment [
] means that the council will consider EDI in all that it does, whether in relation to individual customers, communities or its own workforce and councillors.
To make its commitment visible and highlight the importance of creating a more equal society, the council is proudly displaying a new badge on its buildings and vehicles. The multi-coloured heart shaped badges read ‘Together we are inclusive’ and can be spotted on many fleet vehicles, libraires, leisure centres and key buildings.

Find out more about fostering this Foster Care Fortnight
Cumbria Fostering [
] is inviting local people to find out more about fostering during Foster Care Fortnight, which runs from 13 to 26 May.
The theme of the annual awareness raising campaign this year is ‘fostering moments’ and throughout the campaign our foster carers will be sharing the moments that define their fostering journeys, big and small, to show that every moment matters when you foster.
For foster carer Caz Mullen, from Barrow, “getting the big smile and the hug at the end of the day” is just one of the reasons she loves fostering and would encourage others, with the space and time for a child, to find out more during Foster Care Fortnight.
Fostering offers children and young people a home when they are unable to live with their birth family.
If you think you might have what it takes to foster, you can speak to our friendly team and carers at a virtual or face to face information session during the fortnight:
* *Monday 20 May* - Join our virtual information event between 6pm and 7pm and watch a short presentation on fostering and speak to our friendly team and carers. To book a place on our event please email *claire.crisp@cumberland.gov.uk*
before 12pm on Friday 17 May
* *Friday 24 May* - Come along to our fostering information drop-in at Costa Coffee, Elephant Yard, Kendal from 1pm to 2pm

Have your say on a new playground for Kirkby Stephen
Image reads: Have your say on a new playground for Kirkby Stephen
We’re working alongside Kirkby Stephen Town Council and the Cricket Club to develop a new playground on the ground adjacent to the cricket pitch.
We would like to create an exciting and challenging play experience for children of all abilities up to the age of 14 which would be a destination playground where children and their families could spend the day enjoying the playground, walks along the river and the incredible views from this location.
Complete our short survey to share your views [
] on how we can make this a great experience for local residents and visitors to the town.]
Survey closes *Wednesday 15 May at 5pm*.
