Criminally Good Time Had By All!
Thank you to everyone who celebrated Crime Reading Month with us this June. Visited us to see our exhibitions and book recommendations, took part in a quiz, attended an event or solved a murder mystery with the amazing Highly Suspect. We were delighted to welcome crime writer extraordinaire, Martin Edwards as our resident author for June. Martin completed a tour of Westmorland & Furness Libraries, visiting Penrith, Barrow and Kendal. The audiences loved hearing about his journey to writing success, and had the opportunity ask interesting questions about his process and inspiration. As well as meet and greets and book signings. We hope you had a criminally good time! See you next June for more murder and mayhem.

Magical Moments at Make Mine Manga!
Make Mine Manga is a free touring exhibition funded through ACE Grants and delivered by Lakes international Comic Arts Festival and a consortium of North West Libraries. The exhibition, explores how Manga comics evolved first in Japan and how their brilliant creators continue to expand the medium, and discover today’s generation of award-winning British talents making manga their own way into a truly global language.
The exhibition has been specially created by Paul Gravett, comic publisher, fan and author of Manga: it covers 60 Years of Japanese Comics.
As part of the touring exhibition Lakes International Comic Arts Festival led Six Manga MashUp workshops in Barrow and Kendal Libraries with Manga artists Inko Ai Takita and Chie Kutsuwada. The workshops were a great and fun opportunity to know more about Japanese Manga culture and try drawing manga characters with a professional manga artist. 90 young people attended.
MangaMash Up Workshops were supported by a grant from Westmorland and Furness Council.
“The participants gave their all in learning and applying newly acquired illustration skills - Inko and Hester (from the LICAF Team) were really impressed! There was a real mix of youngsters, with some completely new to comics and others that had a clear love and understanding of manga. Well done everyone!”
A Manga character competition ran during the exhibition with 41 entries.
Prizes have been awarded to ten young people for their entries with a special class prize going to Cambridge Primary School.
The prizes were made possible through a grant by Arts Council England in partnership with LICAF and Bolton Libraries.
*"“something different, what a gorgeous celebration of Mange, loved seeing this exhibition in this building”"*
*"“Thank you for bringing the knowledge to the North! And letting people know Manga is not just cartoons”"*
*"“I loved coming here it makes me feel so calm and positive”"*
*"“its amazing”"*
*"“Its so creative and inspiring especially for young artists”"*

Not Your Average 9-5! The Art of Body Snatching
m
Join us for an evening of macabre discussions as we dive head first into the Georgian underworld and take a look at the often overlooked profession of body snatching. Bypassing formalities such as the rise of private anatomy schools and why the trade took off in the first place, we’ll instead spend the evening visiting graveyards throughout the UK discussing tools of the trade, how to actually get a cadaver out of the ground and consider the effectiveness of some of the slightly less conventional methods invented in an attempt to keep these men at bay. From bumbling anatomy students to the world of wholesale body snatching, get ready to see this profession from a very different angle and one which, for a change, leaves Burke and Hare out of the limelight - although we will answer questions about them if we must …
Due to the content of this talk it suitable for those age 16 and over.
*About Our Speaker*
Suzie Lennox has been researching and writing about the world of body snatching for nearly 20 years having written about the legal implications of the trade for her dissertation at University. Her book, ‘ Bodysnatchers: Digging Up The Untold Story of Britain’s Resurrection Men’ is published by Pen & Sword.
