Changes to the waste and recycling service
image

From Monday 25 March we've got a new contractor, SUEZ, taking over the waste and recycling service.

Many of the staff, including collection crews will be staying the same.

There will still be fortnightly recycling and refuse collections alongside the weekly food waste collection and optional fortnightly garden waste collections.

However some residents' collection days and/or weeks may change.

In the new contract, every week half the borough will be having general waste collections whilst the other half will be having their recycling collected.

This is how collections are made in other boroughs and it means a more efficient collection schedule and it also means it will be easier to catch up on any missed collections.

Find your collection days

From Monday 25 March some residents' collection days and/or weeks will change.

We've written to residents to let you know what your collection days/weeks will be - if you haven't received it yet you can find your collection days by using the collection look up tool.

Your type of collection that week (general waste/recycling) may be different to the current pattern so please take a careful look at the dates/weeks to make sure you are presenting the right bin.

Please ensure your bin is presented by 6am. The time the crews collect your bins may change.

What can go in your bins

Good news - items accepted in your general waste, recycling, food and garden waste bins are not changing.

We are a borough of recyclers - we currently have a recycling rate of 51%, which is the highest recycling rate in Kent!

But together we can recycle more, check before you chuck by visiting our handy 'How do I dispose of' guide on our website.

Do you feed your food caddy?

We collect food waste weekly and on the same day as either your general waste or recycling collections.

Food waste collected in your food caddy is taken to an anaerobic digester in Kent to be turned into renewable biogas. The biogas is fed to the national grid as well as powering the plant itself.

The orange lid of the food caddy can be locked with the handle to prevent pests or animals accessing it.

New contract, new fleet of vehicles

The new vehicles are being funded directly by the council to help save costs. The vehicles are more modern and use electric bin lifts,

This will help reduce the consumption of diesel dramatically, helping lower the services' carbon footprint.

The new fleet also has the collection point for food waste at the side of the truck, showing a clear separation between the
different types of waste collected.

Textiles, batteries and small electrical items can be taken

or taken to clothes banks.

Small electrical items - can be taken various retailers and supermarkets for recycling. If still in working condition
they can be donated to charity.

Batteries - can be taken to various retailers and
supermarkets for recycling.

We will also be running roadshows in the future to collect
