Investment stories - how we are making a difference together
Our Community Panels have been operating for around a year now, and we are proud to have funded some incredible community projects.
Here is some feedback from just a few of the groups funded by Fells and Solway Community Panel:
The North Allerdale Development Trust received two investments - £550 towards a Christmas activity day for children, and £5,286 for a new after-school group in Wigton focusing on neurodivergent children.
Sandra Keaveney, NADT’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “The funding was so important to our community. The Christmas event ensured children had fun and made memories at a time of year when families are under added financial pressure. Many laughs were had, and many thank yous were received.”
Clare Stabler, Head of Youth Provision at NADT, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the funding from Cumberland Council. This vital support not only helps sustain our ongoing programmes, it enables us to expand our reach and positively impact more young people in our communities.”
The panel awarded £1,500 to Silloth Vintage Rally to help buy safety barriers. The group’s treasurer, Wendy Jameson, said: “The funding from Cumberland Council has enabled us to purchase some much-needed safety barriers for the annual Silloth Vintage Rally. Importantly, these will also be available for use at other events on Silloth Green.”
The Lindow Hall received £464 towards kitchen equipment.
Pauline Hinks, a trustee, said: “The grant helped the Bowness-on-Solway Parish Hall (Lindow Hall) provide free lunches in a warm space. It’s also a social opportunity, particularly for the elderly during the winter months.”
Carlisle Society for the Blind received £440 for their Dalston ‘tea and chat’ group.
Marc Costello, Vision Support Manager, said: “This investment from the council has proved invaluable in providing ‘peer support meeting’ opportunities for people with visual impairments. The monthly event provides a chance to get out of the house and chat to others in a friendly environment.”
Kirkbampton Parish Council was awarded £1,320 towards a bus shelter for the village of Little Bampton.
Allan Dawes, Clerk to the Parish Council, said: “We, and the parents and children of Little Bampton, thank the Community Panel. The funding helped build a shelter for children awaiting their school bus.
It means that, in inclement weather, the children stay dry and out of the wind, arriving at school in a much better physical and emotional state. The high-quality shelter will also provide much-needed weather protection for residents and commuters, who may be waiting for taxis and other private vehicles.”
