Spring Budget 2024: update from Lamont Pridmore
Spring Budget
The previously revealed further 2% cut to National Insurance Contributions for employees and the self-employed was the main headline grabber. This, coupled with an increase in the High-Income Child Benefit threshold and banding, alongside plans for funded childcare places announced in the Autumn Statement, cemented the Chancellor’s pledge to encourage more people into work.
There was very little news for corporates - with full expensing and changes to R&D schemes announced previously in the Autumn Statement.
Welcome announcements included the extension to the fuel duty freeze for another 12 months, a freeze on alcohol duty – important to those in hospitality – and albeit a smaller-than-hoped, increase of £5,000 to the VAT registration threshold.
For those with property, there were significant tax changes announced, including the abolition of the furnished holiday letting tax benefits, and a reduction in Capital Gains Tax from 28% to 24% when disposing of residential properties.

International Women's Day
International Women's Day
In celebration of International Women's Day, our destination team at Cumberland Council, joined a guided walk around Whitehaven Harbour on Friday 8 March.
The walk was supported by Adventure Smart Ambassadors to talk about the Adventure Smart campaign and how its messages can keep you safer on your walks and adventures. The walk was delivered by GLL Better Leisure Ramblers Wellbeing Walks and Adventure Smart Ambassadors.
We would strongly advise that you pass on the following messages to any of your visitors that are heading out on a walk:
* Know where you are & where you are going – use an app *_and_* a paper map to stay on track
* If the weather or ground conditions are beyond your capabilities, or equipment, consider your options – it’s ok to choose a more suitable route or to turn back
* Let someone know your plan and make sure they know what to do if they become concerned for your safety.

The Lakesman: Sponsorship opportunity
The Lakesman
The event is now recognised on a national scale and the event organisers are looking to take it to the next level. The event has been approached by British Triathlon Federation to put the race forward as a British Championships race endorsed by them which is a huge achievement.
To help put this event on an international scale and attract championship status, The Lakesman are looking for the following support:
OPTION 1 – Headline Sponsor
Headline sponsorship which will give us the ability to offer a 'prize purse' and be the first UK independent triathlon to offer this, attracting professional athletes to Cumbria who normally only compete in the 'big city' events. To do this we would need a commitment from of £7.500 per annum for a minimum of 3 years to establish the event as the one to go to. As well as attracting top quality athletes it would attract additional tourism, spectators and inspire local children to take part.
OPTION 2 – Volunteer Partner #TeamLakesman
Each year we attract over 400 volunteers to Lakesman from all ages and from a wide variety of backgrounds. Together they do over 1200 hours of volunteering and are trained and supported over the weekend.
We would like to provide a volunteer area but also give people an opportunity to find out more about volunteering for other projects in Cumbria to create long lasting, sustainable social value as an additional output for the event.
To do this properly would cost £3,500 per year and we would like to run the programme (with the partner organisation) for a minimum of 3 years.
If you would like to sponsor or support the event, please contact katie.read@cumberland.gov.uk for more details.

Cumberland Leaflet Swap Shop
Leaflets
Cumberland Council is inviting you to join its first leaflet swap shop which will take place on Monday 25 March 2024, at Solway Hall in Whitehaven. All tourism and hospitality businesses, within Cumberland Council, are welcome to join the free event.
If you ever struggle to suggest activities, accommodation, or attractions to your customers, then this event is perfect for you. The event gives businesses a chance to network with businesses within the Western Lake District and Coast. And, of course, you will be able to exchange leaflets with businesses. Building connections with like-minded businesses is a great way to keep visitors in our area.
The event will take place between 11am and 2pm. Each business will be allocated a table to display their leaflets. Businesses are welcome to bring a backdrop, but it is not essential. The doors will open at 10.30am to begin setting up your stand and the event will begin at 11am.
Free food and refreshments will be provided on the day.
The event is free, and businesses must sign up to be able to attend. The deadline for the business sign up is at 12pm on Thursday 21 March.
You can sign up by completing a small online form. [

Business tracker survey: Have your say
Cumbria Tourism (CT) launched our new business tracker survey to gather real-time information about the challenges and expectations you are facing right now. While yesterday’s budget offered some measures to help put extra cash back in consumers’ pockets the big issues around rising costs and staffing remain unchanged.
Carried out alongside our Strategic Partner, Lamont Pridmore, this anonymous survey helps provide the evidence we need to support your businesses and strengthen our case with national politicians and decision-makers.
