*International Women's Day: abuse of women 65+ *
International Women's day
As we approach International Women’s Day on 8th March, Safety Net is working with Age UK Carlisle and Eden to connect with women aged 65+ in Cumbria, to encourage them to seek support if they're facing any form of abuse.
Unfortunately, older women who are experiencing domestic and sexual abuse often suffer in silence. Until recently, there hasn't been much data on abuse experienced by this age group - the British Crime Survey didn't even ask women aged 65+ about their experiences of abuse until the last few years.
SaveLives
The lack of data made it seem like the issue didn't exist. But thanks to SafeLives initial research in this area, we're starting to understand the reality:
* The best available estimate is that *one in six UK adults aged 60+ experience some form of abuse each year*.
* Of victims that are known to services, research from SafeLives shows that w*omen aged 61 and older are more likely to face abuse from partners or family members compared to younger women.* Older victims are also less likely to leave their abusers than younger ones.
Last year, Safety Net supported 771 women in Cumbria, but only 19 of them were aged 65 or older. Given that about a quarter of Cumbria's female population is in this age group, we should be seeing many more older women seeking support.

What are the reasons older women don't come forward?
Domestic Violence
Some of the reasons women over 65 years old don't come forward may include;
* Older women grew up in a time when abuse was often seen as a private family matter, making it harder for them to recognise it and seek help.
* Women aged 65+ are also more likely to face abuse from family members, making it difficult for them to ‘leave’.
* Disabilities, mobility issues, or care needs may make older women more dependent on their abusers.
* There's often a lack of support networks and accessible housing options for older women, leaving them trapped and unable to reach out for help.

Help and Support is available
Domestic Violence
In the run up to International Women’s Day, women aged 65+ in Cumbria are urged to reach out if they've experienced abuse and need support.
Safety Net are asking everyone to be alert for signs of abuse in older individuals, such as unexplained injuries, a withdrawn demeanor, or financial exploitation. If you're worried about someone, reach out to them or direct them to Safety Net on the Refuge website *here [
].* If you or someone you know needs support, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
*You can call Safety Net on 01228 515859 or email at office@safetynetuk.org.*
Speak to a trained advisor: confidential support and advice
Safety Net are also hosting a coffee and support morning at* Carlisle Town Hall on Friday 8th March from 10am to 12pm*, in partnership with Age UK Carlisle and Eden.
At this event, trained advisors will provide free, confidential advice and support, and partners at Age UK Carlisle and Eden will be available to offer housing, financial and practical advice.
