Anti-racist Practice
The Early Years Team were very saddened over the weekend to read about a racist attack on a school pupil in Carlisle which took place last week. We would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to anti-racist practice within Cumberland, and to work with you all across the early years sector to ensure that our children, families and colleagues feel safe and that no one is made to feel less valued due to the colour of their skin.
Our Early years Strategy Vision includes the following statement:
"Young children are often described as sponges for learning - it is vital therefore that the 'water' around them is anti-racist regardless of the ethnic make-up of their environment. This can range from representation, acknowledging racialised differences (not silencing them), openly discussing racism and being anti-racist ourselves - "Anti Racist Cumbria

Love Food Hate Waste
carrot
Do you know that every day in UK homes, we throw away 2.9 million potatoes, 1 million bananas and 2.1 million carrots!
And 35% of all edible food binned in UK homes is fresh fruit, vegetables and salad.
Buying loose reduces food waste and WRAP research has shown that if all apples, bananas and potatoes were sold loose, we could save 70,000 tonnes of food waste by enabling people to buy closer to their needs.
For inspiration on how you could save food, save money and save the planet, visit the Love Food Hate Waste website [
].
Early years settings and schools can also sign up for free to the Cool Food Pro calculator, to find ways of minimising your carbon footprint (and hopefully saving money too!) - coolfoodpro.net [
