Mental Health Awareness Week
Mental health awareness week
This week is Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 and the theme "is Movement: Moving more for our mental health." In the early years, we know how important physical development is for children – and how excited they become when they learn a new skill such as taking a step or walking along a fallen log. We also know how closely linked their physical development is with their mental and emotional wellbeing.
It is important for us to apply the same principle to ourselves as adults. According to the Mental Health Foundation, regular physical activity has been proven to improve our mental health, quality of life and wellbeing. You can read more about ways to get started on moving more here:

Supporting children affected by parental alcohol or substance misuse
Fuse researchers based at Newcastle University, have co-produced a freely available children’s picture book and story time video to aid conversations between trusted adults and children who experience parental alcohol or drug use.
This is a storybook resource that could be used within the home or school using storytelling and colourful illustrations. "Twinkle, Twinkle Arti" offers positive messages and validation not only to children but to parents/caregivers and practitioners who find it challenging to know how to broach this sensitive topic.

Improving Observations in the Early Years
Stella Louis, author of many valued books including "Again! Again! Understanding schemas in young children", has written a blog article on the importance of making better observations in early years. Stella is concerned that there is a tendency to dilute observations to fit curriculum goals in a way that makes them superficial. She discusses how we can use observations more effectively to improve our daily practice.
