Climate & Nature Strategy - can you help us?
Sheep
We are asking for your views to help shape the first climate and nature strategy which reflects the priorities in the Council Plan. [
]
Drawing on insights from previous work and existing programmes we have prepared a Climate and Nature draft strategy [
].
Community panels are progressing how projects are delivered to the community, and they've been successful in recent achievements.
The Community Panels and their priorities provide an opportunity to link actions to the places that matter most to our communities, their neighbourhoods, villages, and towns. So far, the panels have offered over £40,000 in funding to organisations for projects that will make a difference to climate and nature by:
* Improving access and biodiversity
* Providing outdoor learning sessions and community activities
* Providing energy efficiency measures in community buildings and supporting community hubs
* Protecting and conserving red squirrels
* Enabling a future play area and community orchard
* Supporting a safe cycleway and cycle parking
* Providing healthy lunches in warm spots during winter months
* Providing gardening and cooking equipment for community groups
In addition, much work and strong support has been given to the Towns Fund works of Cleator Moor and Millom which have important elements that improve the environment and health of people in the area.
To help have your say on the draft strategy, please hit the button below which will link to the survey and take approximately five minutes to complete. The survey will close on Monday 20 May at noon.

Regeneration projects update
Regeneration Projects
*Millom*
The transformation of a former bank into a new arts and enterprise centre for the community of Millom and Haverigg has taken another step forward - planning permission has been granted for the £2 million scheme.
It will see work get underway at the property in St George’s Road to create a range of facilities including a cafe, maker’s market, small retail spaces, workshops and studios.
The key highlights of the Arts and Enterprise Hub include:
* Some extensions to the property which are not in keeping with its architectural style or the setting of the building within the town centre conservation area would be demolished.
* The ground floor would then become home to a café, maker’s market and small retail spaces showcasing the products of those operating from four start-up business spaces on the first floor and three workshops, studios and shared studio space on the second floor.
We also need some help with the new play park, and are asking for people to vote - please see the next article.
*Cleator Moor *
A planning application has been submitted for improvements to a leisure facility for Cleator Moor.
Healthy Town is one of four projects that make up the Cleator Moor Town Deal and aims to provide the community with a modern, multi-purpose and inclusive sports facility at the Activity Centre.
The full planning application, sets out the benefits of the improvements to the site which include:
* Four court sports hall.
* Multipurpose studio space.
* New fitness suite
* Changing facilities.
* A new base for Copeland Occupational & Social Centre (COSC) - who provide dedicated outreach support to disabled people and groups.
*Workington *
Work has started on the Oldside site at the Port of Workington to establish the ground conditions ahead of future development.
We are managing the project which aims to use the location to create a clean energy and logistics hub. Around £4.5 million of funding is being provided by the UK Government as part of the Workington Town Deal.
The plans for Oldside’s clean energy and logistics hub is a long term plan to improve this key coastal site. It will allow additional trade and cargo handling at the Port of Workington, with the potential to generate rental income from property lettings at Oldside.
*Maryport*
An array of fun posters designed to showcase the Cumbrian dialect and the personalities of the people of Maryport have gone on show in the town.
This artwork was inspired by the people of Maryport, their quirks, their humour, and their straight-talking attitude. Part of a project called Jus’ Git On Wid It, the creative programme was funded by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The new artwork is on display now at the temporary Maryport Maritime Museum at the junction of Senhouse Street and Curzon Street.
Maryport’s promenade: Construction teams have started work on Sea Brow Gardens and the curved landscaped area to the north of the former toilet block which is, this Summer, destined to become Maryport’s new café and beach shop.
The railings at Sea Brown Gardens are in the process of being replaced. Landscaping all around this area is now being enhanced. The pathways are being widened and resurfaced and new seating and bins being installed. The raised flowerbeds will also be cleared and repaired.
*Carlisle *
*Devonshire Street* - Our regeneration project on Devonshire Street started in February, and should be finalised this summer.
Securing an investment of £2.04 million from Central Government, including contributions from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, Future High Street Fund, and Town Deals, and the proposed plans include more outdoor seating, street furniture, benches, cycle parking, trees, and plants. The projects aim to create a high quality, welcoming environment, with more spaces for people to walk and spend time sitting outdoors.
Although the road is closed, pedestrians can use the footways to access Devonshire Street and we are working closely with businesses to support the message that they are open as usual – businesses that are open are:
Thin White Duke, Scott Duff & Co, Connelley’s Wine and Cocktail Bar, Le Gall, Eaten by Monsters, Sweet Tooth, Nationwide Building Society, Santander, Greggs, Black Box Architects, Paradiso, John Taylor, This Time, The Temple Art Collective, Pizza Express
Businesses in Friars Court: Print Yard, Beauty @ Solo and Hair Works
During the road closure Stagecoach services 61, 62, 63/63A, 69, 104 and 67 will be unable to serve the bus stops on English Street.
Temporary bus stops will be located on Lowther Street outside Club Britannia (the social club) and on The Crescent.
*Greenmarket *- This project involves the enhancement of a 6000-square-meter area, improving the area with a unique multifunctional events space set to host a diverse array of exciting activities and gatherings.
This aims to make the area an attractive destination, nurturing community engagement and attracting visitors.
Our next phase will be looking to relocate the war memorial is part of the plan, with an agreement reached with the British Legion to move it, along with its benches, to a more prominent space within the Market Square, this will be in the summer 2024, with an estimated completed of winter 2024.
*English Street Project - *this project aims to improve the area for all users, promoting active travel, and establishing pedestrian connections that align with these developments. The public spaces in the city centre will be improved, providing an area where people want to spend time, providing an improved gateway to the city. This project will start in summer 2024.
*Carlisle Station Gateway - *working with Network Rail, we are delivering improvements to the station building and areas surrounding the station itself. The project includes partial pedestrianisation of Court Square and an upgraded and welcoming entrance from George Square. Public car parking being relocated to George Square to reduce the vehicular traffic at Court Square and a focus on improving access at Water Street and Court Square Brow to improve access to the station, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists.
The work will continue until 2027, and The Pools has started to get demolished.
The demolition of The Pools will not impact the Turkish Baths. The council is actively collaborating with 'The Friends of the Turkish Baths' to ensure positive outcomes for this building. James Street will remain open for vehicular traffic during the works. The pavements adjacent to The Pools are closed and will remain closed throughout the works for public safety.
