Take Part: May 12th Day
May 12
Mass Observation’s national annual diary day is now in its 14th year.
In 1937 Mass Observation called for people from all parts of the UK to record everything they did from when they woke up in the morning to when they went to sleep at night on 12th May.
The project was revived in 2010. Since then Mass Observation has received thousands of day diaries, creating an invaluable resource of everyday life across the UK.
The project continues to this day and Mass Observation is keen to capture as many different voices and lived experiences as possible.
Diary Day is about recording everyday life in the UK for future generations, anyone can take part and send their diary. They can be as detailed as you like and can include drawings, photos or other creative work.
Especially welcome are diaries from school children, community groups, or other organisations and a template [
] and a learning resource [
] have been created specifically for 12th May.
For more details and how to submit your diary please see the Mass Observation website [
].

A series of pictures [
] showing the Victorian high jinks of Mrs Charles Lamb of Beauport in Hollington and Mrs Musgrave dressed in armour have been purchased for The Keep.
The photographs were taken around 1890 and show the pair enacting various scenes of their own devising. They come from an album of family and friends of the Lamb and Adamson (of Rushton Park in Mountfield) families.
The album was purchased for The Keep by our friends’ association, Friends of The Keep Archive [
].
Some of these pictures can be seen in our new display at The Keep, along with other copies of material purchased with the support of FoTKA.
FoTKA is a registered charity (Charity No 1159372). Through its work, the charity helps save important material which illustrates our history and supports Keep projects.

Image of the Month: A Rare Shakespeare
Shakespeare second edition
SxBaker/146
April 23rd marked the 460th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth.
The Keep is home to several rare editions of his works. A highlight is this second folio of the 1632 edition of his collected plays, published 16 years after his death, which belongs to the University of Sussex Special Collections.
The Keep is also home to a six volume set of Shakespeare from 1709 [
].
This impression pictured above was “printed at London by Thomas Cotes, for John Smethwick, William Aspley, Richard Hawkins, Richard Meighen, and Robert Allot, 1632”.
The illustrator was Martin Droeshout with the bookplate by Francis Pym Esqr. It can be ordered and viewed [
] at Keep.

A Reflection
"Vanessa Nicoara is a third-year undergraduate student in Drama at the University of Sussex. As part of one of her modules, she has completed 35 hours of work experience at The Keep gaining archival experience with Project Archivist, Alexander Taylor."
During my time at The Keep, I have taken part in activities and events and learnt about the different roles and responsibilities of an archivist.
I participated in sorting and organising correspondence and writing top-level descriptions for the Jeremy Hutchinson QC archive that will be available to the public through the online catalogue. This task was enjoyable and engaging as I had the opportunity to gain an understanding of each case and further my knowledge of Britain’s legal history.
I took part in one of The Keep’s ‘Welcome Wednesday [
]' events where the public is given a tour of the building and get to view highlights from the archive. I assisted my mentor in picking out certain materials from the Jeremy Hutchinson QC archive and presenting it.
Finally, I was introduced to the Mass Observation Archive. Overall, this has been a wholesome and enjoyable experience of discovering the important role of an archivist, which I hope to take with me into the future.

Round Up
Photographs from the Jeremy Hutchinson Archive
Images from the Jeremy Hutchinson QC archive
April at The Keep saw a well-received talk exploring highlights from the Jeremy Hutchinson QC archive.
Project Archivist Alexander Taylor introduced the archive, which offers a fascinating glimpse into legal history and the Hutchinson family’s association with modernist artists and writers. Dr. Wendy Hitchmough from the University of Sussex discussed the significance of the materials within the collection.
We welcomed customers to another busy Welcome Wednesday [
] along with a group from St Peter’s Church Brighton.
Also in April participants wrote to their past and future selves in a popular creative writing and collage-making session held by Mass Observation at The Keep. Find out how to take part in more of their events on their website [
].
