With more daylight hours and warmer weather, plans start forming for lazy days by the coast and time outdoors with your favourite people. May is a wonderful month to explore this beautiful coastal corner of southeast England especially as there are two long bank holiday weekends. You’ll discover an abundance of nature, landscapes, beaches and castles, and fabulous entertainment, food and drink and hospitality, all within easy reach of the capital.

Market in Deal

Browsing local markets has to be one of the best ways to sample local produce and find out more about an area. Weekly markets in White Cliffs Country include the bustling Sandwich Market next to the Guildhall on Thursday mornings and vibrant Deal Saturday Market on Union Street Car Park on Saturday mornings. The Market Dover is held on the fourth Saturday of the month in the town's Market Square and other smaller markets are held in village halls. Don’t forget to bring a bag or two!

Roman Painted House

Did you know that there is an astonishing Roman site in the heart of Dover? This Scheduled Monument is thought to have originally formed part of a large 'mansio' (official hotel) for travellers crossing the English Channel when Dover, or Dubris, was the gateway to Roman Britannia. The sensitive site is currently closed for remedial works to allow access to the monument, but it is on schedule to be reopened from the end of July until the end of October at the weekends to allow visitors to view the remains and archaeological finds.
