Nominate someone worthy

Yesterday, the Community and Voluntary Service Honours Committee met in Doncaster; only the second time any honours committee has met outside of London since in 2005. The meeting in “Right Up Our Street” community hub reviewed nominations for the King’s Birthday 2024 Honours list.

A special honours event nearby in Doncaster’s Mansion House to encourage others from across South Yorkshire to nominate deserving individuals for awards has also taken place.

The committee chose to meet in Doncaster as Yorkshire and Humberside is traditionally underrepresented in the honours system. There were no honours recipients from Doncaster in The King’s New Year Honours 2024 list, and only 83 recipients from Yorkshire and Humberside overall, which made up roughly 7% of the total recipients.

If you know someone in your community who has gone above and beyond then consider nominating them for an honour to recognise their remarkable achievement:

Great British Spring Clean returns for 2024

Doncaster residents, community groups and a local school have come together to launch the ever-popular Great British Spring Clean event.

Dozens of people were present on Town Fields today to litter pick the green space as part of the dedicated Keep Britain Tidy campaign which runs until 31 March 2024.

More than 60 events are planned over the next fortnight as people vow to do their bit for the environment and local community and they are not alone with 85% of people who took part in 2022 agreeing that they felt more pride for their local area.

To take part, see further details below:

We will loan equipment such as hi-viz vests, gloves and litter pickers (depending on availability).

Measles: Know the signs and get protected

As you may have seen in the news over recent weeks, there has been a rise in measles cases, nationally and locally.

Two doses of the MMR vaccination can offer protection from measles for life, so it’s really important to make sure that you and your loved ones have received it. You can check if your child had both doses of the MMR vaccination by looking in their Red Book, and check your vaccine records via your GP, or the NHS app. If you have not been vaccinated, contact your GP to arrange a catch-up, for free, at any age.

Symptoms of measles include a cough, reddened eyes, runny nose, rash, and fever. For most people, the illness will be unpleasant, but not serious. However, some people may experience complications, iIf you or your child have symptoms of measles and feel very unwell, speak to NHS 111 or call your GP for advice.

If you need to attend your GP surgery or A&E Department, call ahead so that precautions can be taken to prevent the spread of illness to others. People with measles should stay off from nursery, school or work until they are fully recovered, and for at least four days after the rash appeared.

Doncaster children’s home rated Outstanding again!

A Doncaster Children’s Home that provides specialist care for children who are Deaf has been rated Outstanding following a recent Ofsted visit.

This means that Dickson House, a children’s home managed by Doncaster Deaf Trust, has been rated outstanding by the government regulator for the past seven years.

The home was rated outstanding on the three key criteria: overall experiences and progress of children and young people; how well children and young people are helped and protected; and the effectiveness of leaders and managers.
