This edition will tell you about Easter opening hours, Women’s History Month, the temporary closure of Chesham Library, Early Years Communication Week, Calibre Audio groups, remote printing service, and how to foster children in Bucks.
Easter opening hours
Buckinghamshire Libraries will be closed on Good Friday (29 March) and Easter Monday (1 April).
We wish you a Happy Easter and look forward to seeing you again once we re-open!
Celebrating women in our libraries
Women’s History Month is celebrated in March, a time to recognise the achievements and contributions of women in various fields of history and society.
You can discover books by and about remarkable women in our libraries (
), either by looking at the shelves or using the online catalogue. Libraries have also created special book displays to showcase some of the of our collections.
At Farnham Common Community Library, two special competitions will test everyone's knowledge!
For adults: Can you identify all the famous and inspirational women in the collage displayed in the library?For children: Can you draw, paint, or create a collage of the women that most encourage and inspire you?
One more reason for you to visit the library this month! The competitions close on 31 March.
Chesham Library: temporary closure from 15 March
Chesham Library is changing! We’re excited to announce that this spring, we will be making some changes to Chesham Library.
These alterations will allow us to create a more accessible, inclusive and flexible main library space, with areas for community events and activities. We will also be creating a ground floor study area and adding in an accessible public WC facility. To achieve our vision, we will install a new glass frontage to the building increasing the size of the ground floor area which will now accommodate all library services.
Inevitably, while these improvements are made, Chesham Library will have to close for approximately three months commencing Friday, 15th March 2024. We recognise that Chesham is a popular facility so while this facility is closed a temporary library site will be available at the White Hill Centre, Chesham, HP5 1AG, where you will be able to continue to visit the Chesham Library team.
To ensure no loss of service, the temporary library at the White Hill Centre will be open from Monday, 18th March 2024. Opening hours will be:
Monday: 9.30am - 5pmTuesday: 9.30am - 5pmWednesday: 9.30am - 1pmThursday: 9.30am - 5pmFriday: ClosedSaturday: 10am - 1pmSunday: Closed
Due to space constraints, the White Hill Centre will offer a limited selection of books and audio CDs; customers will be able to return items and make reservations as normal. Similarly, the temporary library will not be able to provide public access computers, printing or study space or run any activities. If you need these facilities, please visit one of our other local libraries, the closest is Amersham Library, which is within the Chilterns Lifestyle Centre, Chiltern Ave, HP6 5AH, where our team there will be happy to assist you.
Our online library resources offer a wealth of information, including online newspapers, magazines, books and audiobooks; you can also renew your items online or via the phone (

Early Years Communication Week
Last week, some of our libraries hosted special storytime sessions to celebrate the Early Years Communication Week (
), an annual campaign from Buckinghamshire Council’s Early Years Service to highlight the importance of supporting the development of young children’s speech, language and communication long before they start school.
Reading is crucial for babies and young children, as it stimulates their imagination, curiosity and cognitive development. As libraries, we are here to support you and your children year-round. When they visit our libraries, they can access various books and activities, such as storytimes and bounce and rhymes sessions, that will enhance their language skills in vocabulary, comprehension and expression.

Calibre Audio groups: discovering the benefits of audiobooks
People with reading challenges can benefit from audiobooks because they enable them to enjoy literature and information without the obstacles of print. Audiobooks can boost listening skills, understanding, vocabulary, memory, and critical thinking. They can also spark the imagination, improve emotional well-being, and cultivate a passion for reading.
If you or someone you know has difficulty reading print books, join our groups run by the national charity Calibre Audio (
). They host monthly meetings at Aylesbury and Great Missenden libraries, where people can listen to books and discuss them.
The groups also aim to help not only people with visual impairments but also people with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, autism and other physical or neurological conditions.
Sessions take place at:

📖 Last Tuesday of each month, from 10.30am to 12pm

Remote printing is now available in more libraries
Our remote printing service at Amersham Library has been a great success since it started last year. We are happy to share with you that we are expanding this service to five other libraries in Buckinghamshire.

You can send documents to our printer queue remotely using your library membership – from any time and any place. You can then collect your prints securely from the chosen library within 24 hours and when it is open.
Using the remote printing service is simple:
Go to bucks.docprint.uk (
) and log in with your library membership and PIN Select the library where you want to collect the print Select your file (accepted formats: PDF and Microsoft Office documents) Click on ‘Upload File’ to transfer the document to our printer queue Go to the chosen library and ask a staff member to assist you with collecting the print and paying the printing fees
After 24 hours, documents will be automatically removed from the printer queue.
