April Round Up
It has been another busy month for the Active Charnwood team but an immensely rewarding one. With our four Steady Steps: Falls Prevention classes starting, the team have been out in the community supporting with the participant assessment in readiness for the 24-week programme which has now started!
We have attended community events, completed a Pickleball Leadership Course with our colleagues at Fusion Lifestyle, attended networking events to discuss Active Travel opportunities in Charnwood, offered Staff Health MOT checks for Charnwood Borough Council staff, supported walks with the ESOL group, worked with SENSE and Loughborough college to lead their physical activity sessions for disabled children, and much more!
Connecting Communities Event
In April the team joined a range of community organisations at Limehurst Academy for the Connecting Communities Event. The team chatted to parents, young people and other local organisations about how to access positive physical activity opportunities in their community.
We always relish the chance to attend events where we can connect with the residents of Charnwood and understand the barriers to physical activity that people may be facing and work with them to find suitable options.
Thank you Limehurst Academy, Public Health, the People Zones and the Violence Reduction Network for organising this brilliant event.
We are hiring!
Do you want to join a passionate and motivated team who are dedicated to improving the lives of Charnwood residents? Active Charnwood are recruiting an experienced fitness instructor to deliver our exciting new Active Ageing Programme!
You can find the full job description and information about how to apply here.
If you have any questions about the role, or would like an informal conversation before applying, please contact Will Blanche on 01509 634966 or will.blanche@charnwood.gov.uk.
Pickleball
Pickleball is the racket sport sensation that is sweeping the nation! The fastest growing sport in the USA has made its way across the pond. A cross between tennis, badminton and ping pong, it is played on a badminton sized court with a low net. It is an inclusive game without a steep learning curve (it was originally created for families!), great exercise, easy to pick up, and huge fun!
That is why Nancy from Active Charnwood, and Steph and Sophie from Fusion Lifestyle, completed their Pickleball Leadership Certification last week, qualifying them to lead Introduction to Pickleball sessions in Charnwood. Pickleball sessions currently run at Sileby Tennis & Pickleball Club but keep your eyes peeled as we work to offer new sessions at our Fusion Leisure Centres soon!
Last few spaces remaining on our Steady Steps Programme
Assessments have started for participants on our Steady Steps courses this April. Steady Steps Falls Prevention is a 24- week programme tailored to those who have previously fallen or worry about falling and is designed to help improve balance and stability.
We have 3 places remaining on our Loughborough Leisure Centre course, 1 place left for our Shepshed and 4 places have become available at John Storer House in Loughborough. Please reach out to us as soon as possible if you would like to be considered for the last few places.
Our next set of courses will begin in October. Please email us at active.charnwood@charnwood.gov.uk to express your interest!
ESOL Activities Continue
As the weather has improved, Active Charnwood’s Sam, and Idverde’s Ranger Sam took the Loughborough College ESOL group to The Outwoods for an Easter Walk. Ranger Sam taught the group about the history and nature of the woodland and showed them the beautiful bluebells. We are lucky to have so many fantastic green spaces in Charnwood. Mental Health Awareness Week
Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 will take place from 13 to 19 May, on the theme of “Movement: Moving more for our mental health”.
Movement is important for our mental health. But so many of us struggle to move enough. We know there are many different reasons for this, so this Mental Health Awareness Week we want to help people to find moments for movement in their daily routines. Going for a walk in your neighbourhood, putting on your favourite music and dancing around the living room, chair exercises when you’re watching television – it all counts!

For wider information about Mental Health Awareness Week, you will find a multitude of resources here.

School Games Volunteers
School Games are looking for volunteers for the 2024 School Games at Loughborough University from 29th August to 1st September 2024!
About the School Games National Finals 2024
The School Games National Finals 2024 is a multi-sport event for the UK's elite athletes of school age and the aim is to create an inspirational and motivational setting, that not only provides our elite young sports people with the opportunity to thrive and perform at the highest levels but encourages more young people to take part and succeed in sport.
The competition provides the opportunity to experience multi-sport events like the Olympic and Paralympic Games and Commonwealth Games.
This is where you come in!
The School Games National Finals 2024 would not be possible without volunteers.
For the event to be delivered successfully, School Games need approximately 200 volunteers who will act as representatives for the event. School Games are looking for friendly, outgoing and reliable volunteers to fulfil a variety of roles including venue volunteers, team attaches and games services volunteers. The work can vary from working on the ticket desk, supporting the athletes, providing spectator support, and many other duties.
For most roles, no specific experience is required as training (including safeguarding training) and briefings will be provided to ensure you are fully prepared for your role and responsibilities. You will also be required to complete the relevant checks.
Registration
Volunteers need to be 16 or over. As School Games are looking to recruit a large number of event volunteers, they would value your support in volunteering and helping to make the School Games National Finals 2024 happen.
You can apply here.
