Flitwick library wants to improve literacy in their young readers

Do you have a patient, calm and gentle dog who would like to help reluctant young  readers to  gain confidence and improve their literacy skills?

Some of our libraries have introduced Dog Therapy Volunteers successfully working with individual children, improving confidence and interest in reading.

Flitwick library would like to expand the service and engage a volunteer to help them to offer this support to local children.

After a year of supporting Flitwick adults to learn the basics or revisit their childhood paino lessons, our volunteer has reluctantly moved on.

Do you have the knowledge skill and patience to help us get the sound of music back in our library?

The Summer Reading Challenge it on its way at all our Central Bedfordshire Libraries

Do you have a teenager looking for something worthwhile to do during the summer holidays?

We are now recruiting for Summer Reading Challenge volunteers aged 13 to 25years.  They will encourage younger children in their reading journey by discussing book choices, sharing rewards and supporting activities in their library.

Volunteers gain confidence and improve their communications skills as well as work experience and new skills.  Their volunteering hours can count towards the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.

A parent of one of last year's volunteers said:

"My teenage daughter really enjoyed helping at the Summer Reading Challenge.  As a parent I think that it did her loads of good and was a great first volunteering/work experience for her."
