TOP STORY: OFSTED Inspection reports ‘Good’ for Westmorland and Furness children’s short break care homes in Penrith and Ulverston
Two Westmorland and Furness Short Breaks care homes for children with physical disabilities and/or complex learning disabilities have been award ‘Good’ by OFSTED [
] after inspections in March 2024.
The homes: 23 Hart Street, Ulverston and 21 Huntley Lane, Penrith, both opened in April 2023 and are owned and managed by the Local Authority. They provide short term respite for up to 6 children aged up to 18 years old.
*Of both homes, the inspector said: *
Children stay in a spacious, welcoming home with a relaxed atmosphere, helping to maintain a sense of calm and safety. Staff ensure that children’s views, wishes and feelings are fully considered. They are encouraged to progress their independence, with life skills such as cooking and shopping.

Windermere Ferry - deep clean COMPLETE
Mallard has received a deep clean, both below and above the waterline so a full, detailed inspection can take place and in preparation for any required repairs prior to painting.
It’s all systems go down at the Lakeside slipway where Windermere Ferry is receiving its five yearly MCA inspection and refit required to maintain its liscence to run.
While ‘Mallard’ is off the water until Friday 24 May, road users are encouraged to follow the signed diversion via the A591 to Ambleside then onto the B5286 Hawkshead.
Windermere Lake Cruises have also launched a new ‘Cross Lakes Shuttle’ foot passenger service offering 10 crossings per day.
We’re looking forward to welcoming you back onto the ferry once the work programme is complete!
